AFMA to assist research on turtle tangles

AFMA officers who find foreign ghost nets or other abandoned fishing gear will now also assist in research to learn more about the destruction this marine debris can cause.

AFMA fisheries officers on patrol in northern waters will be equipped to collect genetic samples from marine turtles that may be found entangled in ghost nets or other derelict fishing gear as part of a research project of the North Australia Marine Research Alliance, based at the Arafura Timor Research Facility in Darwin.
